英文励志短文：心灵深处(Look In Your Heart)

这个故事讲述了一个军人在越南战争后，终于可以回家的事，他在旧金山给父母打电话说：“爸妈，我就要回家了。但我想求你们一件事，我想带一个朋友回家。”“可以啊，”父母异口同声地答道“我们很高兴能见到他。”

有件事情，我应该告诉你们，“儿子继续说，”他战斗中受了重伤，失去了一只胳膊和一条腿，他无处可去，我想带他回家和我们一起生活。”

“听到这些我们感到很难过，儿子。或许，我们可以帮他找到别的安身立命之所。”“不，爸，妈，我就是想让他和我们生活在一起。”“儿子啊，”爸爸语重心长地说，”你难道不明白你的这个要求对我们意味着什么吗？这样的残障人会给我们的生活带来许多难以想象的负担，我们自己还要生活，我们不能让这样的事情打破我们正常的生活，我认为你倒是应该马上回来，把你的同伴忘记吧，他会有办法走好自己的路的。”

听完这些话，儿子挂断了电话，此后便杳无音信。几天后，他的父母接到了一个来自旧金山警署的电话。警察说，他们的儿子从一幢高楼上跌下来，死了。警察确认这是一起自杀事件。悲痛欲绝的父母当即飞往旧金山，去停尸房认领儿子的尸体。他们认出了儿子，然而出乎意料的是，他们的儿子只有一只胳膊和一条腿。

Look In Your Heart

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco.

"Mom and Dad, I"m coming home, but I"ve a favor to ask. I have a friend. I"d like to bring home with me."

 "Sure," they replied, "we"d love to meet him." "He was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He lost a 
arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to live with us." "I"m sorry to hear that, 
son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."

"No. Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."

"Son," said the father, "you don"t know what you"re asking. Someone with such a handicap would 
be a temble burden (负担) on us. We have our own lives to live, and it"s very hard for us. I think you 
should just come home and forget about this guy. He"ll find a way to live himself."
 

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days 
later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from 
a building, they were told. The police believed he killed himself. The parents flew to San Francisco but 
to their surprise they discovered something they didn"t know ——their son had only one arm and one leg.
